Detective Conan: Fallen Angel of the Highway is another hugely entertaining entry in the long running franchise, even if it takes a noticeably different approach to what many fans have come to expect. Rather than building itself around an intricate mystery, the film puts its foot on the accelerator from the very beginning, delivering a thrilling spectacle that rarely lets up.
The biggest strength here is undoubtedly the action. Every major set piece feels larger and more ambitious than the last, with exhilarating motorcycle chases, explosive confrontations and some genuinely stunning animation bringing everything to life. Director Takahiro Hasui has a great sense of pacing, ensuring there is never a dull moment as the film continues to raise the stakes. It is easily one of the most visually exciting Detective Conan films to date.
That shift in priorities does come with a trade off. The central mystery is still enjoyable, but it lacks the layered complexity that defines the series at its very best. Instead of inviting the audience to slowly unravel the case alongside Conan, the investigation often serves as a bridge between the next action sequence. It never hurts the overall experience, but fans hoping for one of the franchise’s smartest mysteries may find themselves wanting a little more.
Fortunately, the characters continue to do a lot of the heavy lifting. Conan is as resourceful and engaging as ever, while Chihaya Hagiwara proves to be an excellent addition to the spotlight. Her involvement gives the story an emotional core that helps balance the relentless pace, and the supporting cast all have their moments without feeling overshadowed.
Ultimately, Detective Conan: Fallen Angel of the Highway succeeds because it knows exactly what it wants to be. It is less interested in crafting the franchise’s most elaborate puzzle and far more focused on delivering a blockbuster experience. While I personally would have liked a stronger emphasis on deduction, the incredible action, polished animation and consistently entertaining pacing make it another very worthwhile outing for Conan.
It may not stand alongside the series’ finest mysteries, but it absolutely earns its place as one of its most exhilarating adventures. If you go in expecting a high octane action film first and a detective story second, you are likely to have a fantastic time.
