‘Pokémon Champions’ | Review

Pokémon Champions is about as straightforward as Pokémon gets, and honestly that is part of the appeal. It strips things back and focuses almost entirely on battling, delivering a simple but seriously addictive loop that is easy to pick up and hard to put down. There is not a lot of fluff here, and that works in its favour.

For anyone who felt a bit off about the battle system in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, this will feel like a return to form. Turn based combat is back front and centre, exactly how you remember it. No major reinventions, no weird twists, just the classic system that the series built its reputation on. It feels familiar in a way that is immediately comfortable.

That focus defines the entire experience. There is very little here outside of battling, but what is here is polished and engaging. Ranked matches are especially well handled, scaling nicely to your level and skill so you are not constantly getting steamrolled or breezing through. It creates that sweet spot where every match feels competitive without being frustrating.

There are some modern touches that will feel familiar if you have spent time with Pokémon TCG Pocket. The game does include microtransactions, but importantly, it is never required to spend real money to play or progress. Everything can be earned through normal gameplay, which makes the system feel far more optional than intrusive. The recruitment system also borrows a bit from that style, with a Pokémon farm that lets you pick from a rotating selection each time, giving it that same kind of randomness you get from opening packs.

Team building is flexible in a way that keeps things interesting. You can work through the battle pass, recruit from the farm, or bring in your favourites via Pokémon HOME. It gives you options depending on how you want to play, whether you are grinding it out or just assembling your dream team as quickly as possible. The only real catch is that not every Pokémon is available right away, with more clearly being drip fed over time in a live service style approach similar to games like Pokémon GO.

At the end of the day, Pokémon Champions knows exactly what it is. If you are here for deep story or exploration, you will not find it. But if you want a game that is entirely built around classic turn based Pokémon battles, this delivers. It is free to download, feels surprisingly complete, and sometimes that is all you really need.
