‘Daemons of the Shadow Realm’ | First Impressions

As a longtime fan of Hiromu Arakawa’s work, from Fullmetal Alchemist to Silver Spoon, I was curious to see what she would do with Daemons of the Shadow Realm. The premise immediately drew me in, and I wanted to see if her signature mix of dark storytelling, humor, and character depth would translate to this series. The first episode didn’t disappoint… though it did blow me away in ways I wasn’t expecting.

About halfway through the episode, a plot twist hit that genuinely shocked me. I was not prepared for it at all. It completely upended my expectations and instantly made me sit up and pay attention. If this is Arakawa’s way of saying “brace yourself,” consider me officially braced.

Animation is top notch, with every movement feeling fluid and deliberate. The creature designs are especially striking, especially the flying teeth daemon. Its grotesque, unsettling form and the way it moves are genuinely memorable, the kind of imagery that sticks with you long after it appears.

This is a very dark first episode. The violence and gore are brutal at times, and some scenes might be hard to take for more sensitive viewers. Paired with a mostly subdued score and long stretches of near silence, it creates a tense, almost suffocating atmosphere. The quiet moments let the weight of the action hit even harder, which is impressive storytelling for just one episode.

There was a lot going on here. The episode is stuffed to the brim with worldbuilding, character introductions, and mysteries, leaving me constantly wondering what the heck is happening. The concept of daemons as partners is interesting, even if it’s not entirely new to anime, and it raises plenty of questions about how these creatures will tie into the characters’ journeys. The mysteries presented here already have me hooked, and I’m eager to see how they unfold.

Overall, I’m excited to see where this series is heading. The combination of shocking twists, high-quality action, unsettling creatures, and Arakawa’s signature dark storytelling has me fully invested. If the rest of the series can balance all this chaos while keeping its mystery and intensity, Daemons of the Shadow Realm could easily become one of the more memorable premieres this year.
